12-Day Journey from Marrakech through the Merzouga Desert

Day 1: Arrival in Marrakech – Transfer to Your Hotel

Upon arrival at Marrakech airport, our driver will meet you and transfer you to your hotel. Spend the rest of the day unwinding and exploring the vibrant Jemaa el-Fnaa square and the bustling souks at your own pace.

Day 2: Exploring the Highlights of Marrakech

Today, embark on a private guided tour of Marrakech’s historic medina with an official local guide (optional). Visit the renowned Koutoubia Mosque, wander through the colorful souks, and uncover the city’s hidden gems, including the Ali Ben Youssef Madrasa, the Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs, and the serene Majorelle Gardens. Conclude the day with an overnight stay in a riad within the medina.

Day 3: Marrakech to Essaouira

Depart from Marrakech and journey toward the coastal city of Essaouira. Along the way, witness the famous argan tree landscapes and local cooperatives producing argan oil. Arriving at this UNESCO-listed port city, explore its fortified medina, stroll along the expansive beaches, and observe the daily catch at the bustling fishing port. Enjoy a relaxing evening in Essaouira.

Day 4: Essaouira – El Jadida – Casablanca – Rabat

After breakfast, travel along the Atlantic coast towards Rabat. Stop in El Jadida, a former Portuguese stronghold and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Continue to Casablanca, where you’ll visit Mohammed V Square and the impressive Hassan II Mosque. In Rabat, explore the Mechouar (the fortified area of the Royal Palace), the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, the Hassan Tower, and the Kasbah of the Udayas, offering breathtaking ocean views. Overnight stay in a riad or hotel in Rabat.

Day 5: Rabat – Tangier – Rif Mountains – Chefchaouen

Journey to Tangier and then ascend into the scenic Rif Mountains, arriving in the picturesque blue city of Chefchaouen. Famous for its striking blue-washed buildings, Chefchaouen is a charming town with a laid-back ambiance. Meander through its winding alleyways, explore local markets selling handcrafted wool products and goat cheese, or relax in the central square. Spend the night in a riad in Chefchaouen.

Day 6: Chefchaouen – Volubilis – Meknes – Fez

After breakfast, leave Chefchaouen and travel through rolling agricultural landscapes to reach the ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis. This well-preserved archaeological site offers insight into Morocco’s Roman history. Continue to Meknes, a former imperial city, where you’ll visit the Bab Mansour Gate and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail. In the afternoon, proceed to Fez, where you will settle in for the night.

Day 7: Full-Day Exploration of Fez

Spend the day discovering Fez, Morocco’s cultural and spiritual heart. Accompanied by a local guide, explore Fez el Bali, the old medina, with its maze-like alleys and traditional souks. Visit Al-Qarawiyyin University, the world’s oldest functioning university, as well as the Mellah (Jewish Quarter) and Fez Jdid. The medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to over 9,000 winding streets, making it one of the most fascinating places to explore.

Day 8: Fez – Ifrane – Azrou – Midelt – Ziz Valley – Merzouga

Depart Fez and drive through Ifrane, often called “the Switzerland of Morocco,” before continuing to the cedar forests of Azrou, where you may spot Barbary macaques. Travel across the Middle Atlas Mountains, passing through Midelt and the Ziz Valley, before arriving in Erfoud, the gateway to the Sahara. Reach Merzouga, where you will spend the night in a hotel or riad near the dunes.

Day 9: Merzouga – Berber Nomads – Black Desert – Camel Trek & Overnight in the Sahara

Start the day by visiting the village of Khamlia, known for its unique Gnawa music and culture. Experience traditional Berber hospitality by visiting a nomadic family and learning about their way of life. In the afternoon, embark on a camel trek across the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi, led by an experienced guide. Spend the night in a desert camp under the stars or in a traditional Berber tent, enjoying a hearty dinner and live music around the campfire.

Day 10: Merzouga – Rissani – Todra Gorges – Dades Valley

Wake up early to witness the breathtaking sunrise over the dunes before returning to the village by camel. Depart for Rissani and explore its lively market before continuing toward the Todra Gorges. Marvel at the towering canyon walls before heading to Boumalne Dades. Stop along the way to admire panoramic views of the Dades Valley before settling in for the night.

Day 11: Dades Valley – Ouarzazate – Ait Benhaddou – High Atlas – Marrakech

After breakfast, journey toward Ouarzazate, known as the “Hollywood of Africa.” Stop at the impressive Kasbah Taourirt before visiting the famous Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO-listed ksar used as a filming location for many movies. Enjoy lunch in the area before crossing the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka pass, arriving in Marrakech in the evening.

Day 12: Departure from Marrakech

Conclude your adventure with a transfer to the airport, bringing your unforgettable 12-day journey through Morocco to an end.
